The HiCo Region can count on excellent infrastructures made up of intermodal transportation systems (motorways, railways, ports, airports and traffic centres). The European Corridor 5 is particularly relevant. It covers the following route:

  • Venice
  • Trieste/Koper-Capodistria
  • Ljubljana
  • Maribor
  • Slovenian/Hungarian state border
  • Budapest
  • Hungarian/Ukrainian state border
  • Uzgorod
  • Lvov
  • Kiev

The European Corridors make up a trans-European communication network involving all types of transportation (road, railway, water and air). The network has been developed as a consequence of the growth, since 1990, of political-economic relationships and of cooperation relationships between Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe. It is made up of 10 corridors and should be completed by 2010.

The population density of the HiCo Region contributes to the capillarity of communication routes, whereas the presence of ports and airports in a relatively small area allows for maximum mobility of people and goods.

Friuli Venezia Giulia motorways are managed by the companies Autovie Venete and Autostrade per l’Italia and are connected to the Slovenian network at the border posts of Fernetti (Trieste) and Sant’Andrea (Gorizia). Slovenian motorways are managed by Dars.
The railway network management is headed by the Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato (state railway group) in Italy and by Slovenske Železnice in Slovenia. Both companies guarantee transportation of people and goods. The railway network is characterized by a remarkable capillarity and by connections with the main areas where movements of goods take place, such as ports.
The HiCo Region can count on four relevant ports, adequately connected to other routes of transportation of goods, such as motorways, railways and airports. The Port of Trieste is the most relevant in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. Together with the Port of Koper, it is characterized by a particular free zone status, due to a special law on customs. The Port of Monfalcone is well-known, among other reasons, for the impressive Finmeccanica shipyards, where large cruise ships are built.

On the HiCo Region territory, the international airport of Ronchi dei Legionari and the national airport of Portorož are located. The Ronchi airport enjoys a remarkably central position in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, being near to Gorizia and Monfalcone and a few miles away from Trieste and Udine, to which it is effectively connected. The Portorož airport, serving the Koper area, is used for passenger, tourist and business flights. However, the HiCo Region takes advantage of the proximity of the Venice and Ljubljana airports.

Several fixed an mobile phone operators are active in Italy and Slovenia. Telecom Italia and Telekom Slovenije are the main operating companies. Both offer services to privates and enterprises. The HiCo Region territory is wired for broad-band Internet connection and has a total coverage for mobile phones, for which it is possible to choose among a variety of operators.
