The railway network management is headed by the Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato (state railway group) in Italy and by Slovenske Železnice in Slovenia. Both companies guarantee transportation of people and goods.
The railway network is characterized by a remarkable capillarity and by connections with the main areas where movements of goods take place, such as ports.
Within the project for the creation of the Pan-European Corridor 5, a high-capacity and high-speed Trieste-Ljubljana route is under study. It should become a connection with Slovenia and from Slovenia to Hungary and Ukraine, as well as to Croatia and the Balkans in general.
On the other hand, a direct connection between Venice and Ljubljana is already active. It is classified as Eurocity and operated by Slovenian trains. This new service is available every day. As it does not stop in Trieste, it has allowed a reduction of journey time from 6 to 4 hours.

Trenitalia Trenitalia is the transportation company of the Ferrovie dello Stato group. Trenitalia Logistica operates in the field of conventional and combined carriage of goods. Conventional carriage allows to transport in traditional wagons great quantities of goods from production sites to distribution markets. Combined carriage integrates railways with other modalities (land and sea). According to this technique, containers transported on trucks and ships are directly trasferred on specialized railway cars.
Information to plan a railway transport plus an interactive map of stations (Gorizia Centrale, Monfalcone, Ronchi dei Legionari) and of intermodal terminals are available on the web site.The Slovenske Železnice Group operates people and goods transportation on national and international routes.
The movement of goods can be made on single cars or dedicated trains, also in combination with other types of transportation (combined transportation). Services of “door to door” goods transportation on industrial railtracks as well as storage in warehouses (the terminal is located in Koper) are provided. In case of complex transportations, advisory services can be requested for logistic solutions.
The website features prices and timetables with real-time delays and a map of the Slovenian railway network with building activities and tariffs for the transportation of goods.The logistic centre of Cervignano del Friuli is located 11 km away from Porto Nogaro, 29 km away from the Port of Monfalcone and 48 km away from the Port of Trieste.
A new railway marshalling yard is adjacent to the logistic centre.
Furthermore, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Authority signed an agreement with the Autovie Venete motorway company for planning, building and managing a connecting road near the intermodal station, to link the Palmanova motorway toll gate to the Venice-Trieste national road.
Works should be completed by 2006.
