The HiCo Region territory is characterized by a microcosm of research institutions, universities and advanced education institutes. In particular, since the 1960s, the Trieste area has shown a vocation for becoming an interdisciplinary centre of excellence for scientific and technological research, a meeting point and a centre for sharing experiences of scientists coming from all over the world, as well as a pole for spreading scientific knowledge.

Today, the model known as “Sistema Trieste (Trieste System) is a universally recognised reality, in which university research, centres of excellence and technology transfer centres cooperate at local, national and international level for knowledge production, ownership, transfer and management.

The system of research and technological development is essential to enhance the territory and the production activities which, consequently, are strongly enriched also thanks to technology transfer institutions.

The HiCo Region can count on five universities in its territory. The relationship between University and the Enterprise worlds and the orientation of research towards the market are demonstrated by the initiatives of the Nova Gorica Polytechnic, which is among the co-founders of the Primorski Technology Park and of the University of Primorska (Koper). This, in its turn, created the Primorska University Incubator. The University of Trieste and ISAS represent important components within the "Trieste System", whereas the University of Udine is strongly oriented towards technical and scientific disciplines, to respond to the local production-system needs.

The HiCo Region research institutions are mainly concentrated in the Trieste area. Since the 1960s, a development system of scientific studies based on the connections among different institutes has been started here. Presently, research follows several directions. These include technologies of materials, mechanical sciences, genetic engineering and biotechnologies, nanotechnologies, nuclear physics, ecology, oceanography and marine biology, oncology.

Schools and advanced training institutes, together with universities, contribute to the high level of vocational qualification that can be found in the HiCo Region. Physics, genetic engineering and biotechnology, neurobiology, chemistry, environmental studies, advanced technology and new materials, technology management, management are the main teaching areas. Beside ISAS and MIB schools, institutions such as AREA Science Park and ICS-UNIDO, which deal with life–long education, are worth mentioning.
