The advanced education and training system is made up of a group of schools and authorities. On one side, they carry out cutting-edge research on themes which are often marginal but do not lack commercial consequences for this reason. On the other side, they enhance the purest enterprise culture, thanks to MIB School of Management Master degrees and to life-long education offered by AREA Science Park.
At the same time, the activity of institutions such as The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology or ICS-UNIDO supports developing countries and emerging economies, according to a philosophy of international cooperation that is not limited to fulfilling essential human needs, but contributes to the real development of the poorest countries by training a modern class of scientists.
Trieste, once the main Austrian-Hungarian port, fully regains its Mitteleuropean central position in this way, presenting itself as an international city open to new growth and development opportunities.

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, besides allowing scientists from developing countries and Eastern European countries to spend periods in laboratories, universities and research institutions in Italy, promotes programmes for training in research, to support scientific institutions of developing countries. Beside the field of physics, in which the Centre performs its research activity, the training activity covers scientific areas such as laser and optics, plasma physics, medical physics, soil physics, mathematical ecology. The diploma programme addresses students coming from developing countries, who need to improve their knowledge to attend Ph.D. courses. A joint ICTP/ISAS diploma programme is also available.
MIB – School of management offers post-graduate courses and actions for life-long education, by developing programmes for cooperation and exchange with the most qualified research and training experiences carried out at an international level. MIB is a member of the main European business school networks. The School is strongly rooted in the territory and the course contents are structured according to enterprise needs. Enterprises also benefit from an advisory service for the planning of management development activities.
The Centre for Science and High Technology, deals with the transfer of scientific knowledge and technologies to developing countries and to countries undergoing economic transition. It organises approximately 50 training events every year and has trained more than 13,000 technicians so far. Particularly, the action of the Centre is carried out in three main ways: granting of scholarships for technicians and scientists coming from the above-mentioned countries, organisation of training courses, promotion of seminars and conventions. Chemistry, environmental studies, advanced technology and new materials, technology management are its areas of activity.
ICMS is a non-profit organisation founded in 1968 by European scientists to favour exchange and application of the most advanced knowledge in mechanical sciences and in other fields (mathematics, systems theory, information theory, operative research, computer science, artificial intelligence). In the premises of Palazzo del Torso, in the centre of Udine, the centre is provided with two classrooms, several rooms for seminars and meetings, library, registrar’s office, technical and administrative offices. The main activity of the Centre is the organisation of courses, seminars, group works, symposia and conferences in which the state of the art of these sciences is presented to researchers. The Centre also organises courses in Italian for professionals and technicians.
Luciano Fonda University College for Sciences is a non-profit international school of advanced education and training in sciences, started up by the Consortium for the Incrementation of Studies and Researches in Trieste University Physics Departments.
The Oncologic Reference Centre of the Italian National Institute for Cancer, carries out clinical and experimental activities, articulated in six research lines aimed at improving knowledge of aetiology and biology of malignant tumours and identifying new ways of prevention, diagnosis and therapy. It promotes and carries out initiatives targeted to diffusion of acquired knowledge and to prevention. It also performs theoretical and practical teaching activities in a view of life-long training in oncology.
The Liver Studies Centre of the Fund for the Study of Liver Diseases is a non-profit organisation performing basic and clinical research activities, with particular reference to the molecular bases of liver physiology, molecular mechanisms of liver carcinoma and molecular mechanisms of liver, kidney and intestine transportation. The Centre also carries out educational activities, in cooperation with the University of Trieste and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Consortium for Molecular Biomedicine, whose shareholders are prestigious public research institutions (the AREA of Research Consortium is the major shareholder with a 40% share), enterprises and financial companies, targets the production and marketing of products for diagnostics and medical pharmacology, in the areas of vascular cardiology, neurosciences, oncology, hepatology and regenerative medicine. Particular attention is devoted to the carrying out of industrial research and to pre-competitive development, targeting the market through research spin-off microenterprises. The Consortium managing the District for Molecular Biomedicine intends to be a centre of excellence in its field.
The “Burlo Garofolo” Scientific Institute for Hospitalization and Healthcare represents a centre of excellence for research in the field of biomedicine and in organisation and management of healthcare services. It also offers highly specialized hospitalization and healthcare services in the paediatric and maternal fields. Research is articulated along the following lines: maternal-foetal medicine, neonatology, chronic diseases and tumours arising in paediatric age, paediatric surgery and rehabilitation sciences, neurosciences of childhood age, diagnosis and care of infectious diseases and chronic-degenerative diseases in the maternal-paediatric area.
“Eugenio Medea” IRCCS develops its research activity in the field of neurosciences, by means of neurogenetic and bioengineering methods, with specific reference to neurological and neuropsychic pathologies of childhood age and to the study of new strategies in the field of neurorehabilitation and prevention of physical, psychic and sensorial disabilities, mainly in childhood and adolescence.
